Open call for proposals
Application deadline: September 30, 2016
At the on-site briefing of Public Art for Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY, renowned art director Fram Kitagawa explained the criteria and his aspirations for the open call for proposals.
The open call, conducted in an unprecedented scale, welcomes suggestions from artists of any discipline from around the world to fill 28 sites at the 25 ha site. Together with 15 invited artwork productions, these works form part of the permanent installations of the redeveloped area. The sites are spread around five main areas of the development project, namely financial institutions, commercial landmarks, the art center, the luxury residential area and the five-star hotel. The three categories of the Open Call include “installation,” “digital art,” and “spatial and product design.”
The deadline for the open call is September 30, 2016.
“In today’s globalized world, we wish that local culture and characteristics can also thrive. Lujiazui is a new redevelopment in Shanghai, a global city with its own history, tradition and culture. Proposals reflecting local flavours of different places and the diversity of the contemporary world shall prove stimulating to us. That said, the open call welcomes any proposals, as long as they are interesting and feasible,” he said.
Every selected proposal will receive 200–500,000 RMB for execution, subjected to their actual needs. As a rule of thumb, Kitagawa urges artists to consider the diversity of users of the public space, and submit proposals that avoid political, sexual and violent themes. Other than that, there is no need to limit themselves with practical concerns.
Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY is redeveloped from Shanghai’s iconic ship yard, carrying the city’s treasured history with it. After the famed Faret Tachikawa, Kitagawa hopes to invigorate yet another urban area with public art, by welcoming proposals from around the world.
Led by Kitagawa, the Open Call adjudication panel comprises Jean de Loisy (President of the Palais de Tokyo), Andrea Schlieker (Director of Commissions and Public Projects at White Cube) and Fang Zhenning (independent curator).
