Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY launches an international open call for proposals for 28 sites throughout the redevelopment area. All artists, regardless of age, gender, nationality, and practice, are welcome. Together with 15 invited works, the 28 artworks will be showcased at more than 40 sites in the area, to bring a new breath of life and create an unparalleled urban cultural space for generations to come.
Located at the Lujiazui Central Business District in Shanghai, Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY is one of the most advanced urban redevelopments to become a new landmark for Shanghai. In cooperation with world famous master architects and architecture firms including OMA, Kengo Kuma, KPF, BENOY and Arquitectonica, the 250,000 square meter district is turning into an upscale city complex, which contains financial institutions, commercial landmarks, an art center, luxury residential areas and five star hotels. The district will be energized by large-scale public art by world’s leading and emerging artists.
Ever since the opening of its port 180 years ago, Shanghai has been a major center of international trade. The city embraces its historic buildings and its ever-deepening cultural strata, which give its neighborhoods highly varied characters. Interactions with the peoples from many lands who flock to Shanghai continually deliver new energy and creativity to the city. Public Art for Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY will celebrate and disseminate those urban experiences and Shanghai’s distinctive identity by inviting artists from around the world to participate in the project.
The project is directed by Fram Kitagawa, known for his success with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and Setouchi Triennale, along with 15 world-renowned 21st century artists. They will be joined by 28 talented and emerging artists from around the world selected through an open call for proposals. The proposals will be judged by Director Fram Kitagawa, Jean de Loisy (President of Palais de Tokyo), Andrea Schlieker (Director of Commissions and Public Projects at White Cube), and Fang Zhenning (independent curator). Selected artists will be awarded and commissioned to create their proposed works at the sites to be completed by the end of 2017.
“Space-Time Vessel Travelling Through the Universe” is the organizing theme for Public Art for Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY. By seeding urban public spaces with works of art expressing the ideas of artists around the world, Luijiazui HARBOUR CITY will symbolically reflect the diversity and the contemporaneity of our 21st century world.
