Open call for proposals
Application deadline: September 30, 2016
Hall A301, Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing
Public Art for Lujiazui HARBOUR CITY, directed by Fram Kitagawa, known for Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale, and Setouchi Triennale, is entering its final stage of the international open call. The project is one of the first major public art incentives in Shanghai. By including public art pieces to be part of Lujiazui HABOUR CITY, redeveloped from Shanghai’s iconic ship yard, the project aims to integrate the city’s unique culture and history in its on-going redevelopment.
Want to be part of this exciting process? Don’t miss the last chance to submit your proposals to the open call! Kitagawa expects that new talents and emerging artists will participate and realize interesting projects like in Faret Tachikawa, which he directed 20 years ago and accommodate permanent works by the now top artists including Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Anish Kapoor, Martin Kippenberger, Joseph Kosuth, Jaume Plensa, Felice Varini, Richard Wilson and many more.
On Thursday, September 8, Fram Kitagawa will give a lecture on “Public Art and Urban Regeneration” at Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing, for the final call for submission of art proposals for the Lujiazui HARTBOUR CITY.
The open call, conducted in an unprecedented scale, welcomes suggestions from artists of any discipline from around the world to fill 28 sites at the 25 ha site. Together with the invited artwork productions by 15 world renowned artists, these works form part of the permanent installations of the redeveloped area. The sites are spread around five main areas of the development project, namely financial institutions, commercial landmarks, the art center, the luxury residential area and the five-star hotel. The three categories of the Open Call include “installation,” “digital art,” and “spatial and product design.”
Deadline for the open call is September 30, 2016.
Every selected proposal will receive 200–500k RMB for execution, subjected to their actual needs. As a rule of thumb, Kitagawa urges artists to consider the diversity of users of the public space, and submit proposals that avoid political, sexual and violent themes. Other than that, there is no need to limit themselves with practical concerns.
Led by Kitagawa, the open call adjudication panel comprises Jean de Loisy (President of the Palais de Tokyo), Andrea Schlieker (Director of Commissions and Public Projects at White Cube) and Fang Zhenning (independent curator).
