Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) is an internationally oriented, academic university of the arts with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. With around 1,000 students in the fields of fine arts, art education, performing arts, design, visual communication, art history and media studies, HBK is one of the largest art schools in Germany. The scholarship programme “Braunschweig Projects” offers seven artistic and one curatorial stipends every year on behalf of the state of Lower Saxony. HBK Braunschweig is now accepting applications for the curator scholarship starting on April 1, 2025. Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2024 (date of email receipt).

Goals of the scholarship are:
–to enrich curatorial practice at HBK by developing and realising a curatorial concept for the final exhibition of the Braunschweig Projects artistic fellows. The scholarship holder will therefore already take part in the jury meeting to select the artistic fellows of Braunschweig Projects and will work closely with the selected artists during the course of the programme.
–to develop a curatorial project based on previous work of the applicant that is ideally connected to a museum, a collection, a scientific institution or a cultural institution in Lower Saxony. The project draft should consider research, preparation and implementation, the calculation, communication and possibly an educational or accompanying programme.

While the scholarship holder can draw on the university’s attractive network, the stipend offers great opportunities for own ideas and organisation. Close cooperation and a connection to the work of the academic and artistic staff and especially the students of HBK is desirable. At the end of the funding period, a short final report should provide information about the activities undertaken.

A prerequisite for a succesful application is that the applicant has already gained initial curatorial experience (at least three years).

Funding is provided in the form of scholarships totalling 1,400 EUR per month over a period of twelve months. A fully equipped workplace at the university is provided and the presence on site is expected for at least one week per month. A project cost subsidy of up to 4,000 EUR will be provided to support the exhibition activities. A budget of 2,000 EUR is available for travelling. The scholarship holder will also be given the opportunity to develop their own teaching skills through a separately remunerated teaching assignment. A proposal for the assignment can be attached to the application. Funding will start on April 1, 2025. A flat in Braunschweig cannot be provided.

Applications must be submitted using the application form with reference to the specific scholarship by August 31, 2024 to the following e-mail address: kuratieren-stipendium [at] hbk-bs.de (e-mail inbox received by 11:59pm, later submissions will not be considered). The decision on the award of the curatorial scholarship will be made on the basis of the recommendation of an expert jury by the board of HBK Braunschweig.
