The exhibition brings together a group of international artists who deal with the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard in various ways. Their works explore both the radically changing landscape and its imagery, as well as the history of the mining industry. The aesthetics of machines and people shaped by nature and technology, as well as the sociopolitical realities behind the concept of the “North,” are topics discussed in this exhibition. Bituminous coal extraction and its consequences is among many remarkable connections between the two places, a Kunsthalle in the Ruhr area and the Svalbard archipelago near the North Pole.

The Kunsthalle Recklinghausen is one of Recklinghausen’s municipal museums with a collection of over 5,000 works that has continuously grown since it was founded by the artist group “junger westen” in a 1,000 sqm former WWII above ground bunker in 1950. The Kunsthalle Recklinghausen is part of the 21 RuhrKunstMuseen, a unique group of museums across the Ruhr area.
