MAXXI celebrates its tenth anniversary with a great 10-hour digital marathon.
A festival that will bring together the great Italian institutions, international and Italian museum professionals, curators, historians, artists, architects, designers, scientists and other intellectuals and multidisciplinary activists, who will present and discuss their ideas, visions and strategies to address the current crisis and imagine new forms and functions for cultural institutions.
The festival, which alternates live debates and video contributions recorded specifically for the occasion, is organised in two sections.
The first one, entitled “MAXXI in the World, or Are Global Museums still needed?,” reflects on how the pandemic has affected the function, organisation, perception and programming of museums (MAXXI’s online palimpsest during the lockdown had over 13 million views): in the post-Covid-19 emergency reality, redefined by digitisation and social distance, can museums continue to develop as the main public research space? How can the local and global dimension of contemporary research be reconciled?
The second one, “Towards a New Ecology of Creation,” launches a creative challenge for museums to become the main laboratories for experimenting and defining a new ecology of creation, involving ever broader communities and increasingly multifaceted knowledge sharing practices. In this section, there will be a focus on the theme of living and how the Coronavirus has influenced and modified the relationship between us and our home, namely our way of experiencing it. The same theme is at the heart of the new setting-up of the exhibition At Home 20.20, which will reopen to the public on June 18.
The event is introduced and moderated by Giovanna Melandri, Fondazione MAXXI President; Hou Hanru, MAXXI Artistic Director; Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, MAXXI Arte Director; Margherita Guccione, who has recently taken over the direction of MiBACT’s Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity after having directed MAXXI Architettura for 10 years and Pippo Ciorra, Senior Curator MAXXI Architettura.
Among the many guests who will take turns on MAXXI’s virtual stage is the Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini and the President of the Chamber of Deputies Roberto Fico, who will open the Festival. And also, David Adjaye, Cecilia Alemani, Zdenka Badovinac, Petra Blaisse, Bernard Blistène, Stefano Boeri, Edoardo Bonaspetti, Manuel Borja - Villel, Ilaria Capua, Maristella Casciato, Roberto Cicutto, Jose Miguel G.
