Founded in 1961, the institution is named after the great Serbian painter Nadežda Petrović, born in Čačak. The main activity of the Gallery is realized by active participation in the field of contemporary fine/visual arts, through museological and publishing activities.

The gallery organizes the biennial Nadežda Petrović Memorial exhibition (since 1960), one of the most important exhibitions in Serbia, which presents the current scene of the Serbian and European art space. The gallery has its own fund and functions according to museological principles. The collection of the Gallery consists of almost 1,800 exhibits classified into seven collections: Nadezhda and contemporaries; Yugoslav art of the second half of the 20th century; Contemporary art; Memorial collection of Bogić Risimović Risim; Collection of drawings and caricatures by Piero Križanić; Prodanović family legatee; “Sonja Savić” memorial collection.

In addition to the Memorial, other regular exhibitions and manifestations are organized: Youth, Recognition, Sonja’s September, ChanceArt in two exhibition spaces. Since its foundation, over 500 exhibitions have been held (31 Nadežda Petrović Memorial exhibitions and over 100 guest appearances. The curator’s professional research is published in the editions “Heritage” and “Equilibrium”. The gallery collections are presented in the popular publications “Pictures and their secrets” and “Children and images”.

The gallery also organizes other types of programs - promotions, presentations, seminars, art and professional workshops, film and video screenings, literary evenings, performances, art events, concerts, etc. as well as programs in the fields of graphic and fashion design, architecture, literature and multimedia.

The contemporary profile of the institution is also marked by: permanent and studio legacy exhibitions, expert research works of curators and collaborators, theory and practice of the contemporary visual scene, artistic production and production of exhibitions, active internet site, various multimedia publications, presence on social networks, etc.
