Since 2000, the Korean Cultural Center, the cultural department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Germany, has hosted numerous exhibitions, workshops and symposiums, providing various opportunities to experience unique art, design and culture from Korea. In addition to our own events, we have also supported artists, festivals and institutions, as well as project spaces and independent curators in Germany through the open call, funding program and collaboration.
In 2017, we rebranded the Korean Cultural Center’s exhibition space as “gallery damdam” to have greater focus on introducing Korea’s contemporary art scene. The name of the gallery, “damdam,” has two different meanings in the Korean language; it can mean a calm atmosphere or deep, wide waters. According to these meanings, we try our best to provide the public with a diverse and pleasant space of art to enjoy and participate in. For this purpose, we have invited a variety of artists working with different mediums and themes, such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Jane Jin Kaisen, Kim Heecheon, Yunchul Kim, Mire Lee, and others. We have also collaborated with Transmediale, ZKM, Groupius Bau, Schinkel Pavillon, and New Now Festival, as well as Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Museum Ludwig, Rathausgalerie in Munich.
