With its project-based “Media and Fine Arts” diploma degree, it emphasizes the development of artistic practice, together with the acquisition of media technology and media-theoretical skills. The Academy pursues an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching and researching of media and visual arts. The department of art at the KHM is offering the following position, starting from the winter semester of 2025/26.
Professor in Networks (m/f/d)
German salary grade W2, full-time, tenured
If prerequisites are met, employment in the civil service is possible as civil servant (in German: Beamter/Beamtin) or as public employee under private law.
We are looking for an artist who covers the fields of contemporary media and global networked systems and whose practice includes a focus on deconstructing, revealing and reinterpreting the hidden structures of network aesthetics, politics, and functions.
The candidate will be expected to be open-minded and inquisitive. His/her artistic practice and research is expected to cover areas such as but not limited to: Aesthetics and politics of the Web, Big Data, Quantified Self, social and neural networks. The basis for this field of research is the intensifying interweaving of the digital and analog space.
The teaching position shall be characterized by a strong reflection of and artistic intervention into these processes, the results of which may manifest themselves online and/or in real, physical settings. Critical artistic knowledge of network technologies is prerequisite.
The candidate’s responsibilities include participation in the organization and implementation of courses, the continuous support of student projects, participation in artistic development and research projects, as well as the active involvement in the self-administration of the university and organizational support of the department of art.
Participation in the development of a new artistic-scientific doctoral program is also required. PhD/doctorate applications are welcome, but not a requirement.
The decisive criteria for the appointment as professor is outstanding artistic talent. Further requirements are set out in Section 29 of the Kunsthochschulgesetz NRW (North Rhine-Westphalian Art School Act).
Pedagogical aptitude and experience, as well as empathy and social competence are expected, combined with a sensibility towards diverse student identities (gender, race, class, disability, sexual orientation). In case of the need for improved proficiency in German, the KHM will cover the tuition fees for language courses to enable active participation in the self-administration of the university, in particular participation in committees and the further development of the curriculum. It is expected that the applicant will live in the Cologne area.
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a discrimination-free learning, teaching and work environment and works towards removing structural barriers (such as physical abilities, language, nationality/ethnicity, age, gender, heteronormative, and others). We actively encourage applications from all those who can contribute, through their research, teaching, lived experiences, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at KHM.
The KHM strives to raise its female quota in research and teaching positions. Applications by women will be given priority if qualifications and professional expertise are equivalent to those of male applicants and reasons specific to individual candidates do not prevail.
The KHM explicitly encourages qualified candidates with migrant background and/or who are BIPoC to apply. People with recognized disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the case of equal suitability.
Submitted material should include a cover letter, CV, portfolio, i.e. relevant documentation of artistic work, and a sketch of possible courses.
