The Syracuse University School of Art, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) invites applications for two full-time Tenure Track Assistant Professor positions in the Painting area beginning August 2025.

The primary scope of these positions involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the Studio Art Program, develop, and maintain a strong professional presence, service to the Program, School, College, and University as well as contribute to the discipline as appropriate.

We welcome job applications from individuals whose experience, expertise, and professional practice will enhance the school’s and college’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Position one: Representational Painter teaching observation and perceptually based painting practices. Expertise in teaching life drawing and painting, including anatomy as well as classical and contemporary approaches to perceptual/observational painting.

Position two: Non-Representational Painter teaching abstraction, experimental techniques, and interdisciplinary practices in painting, including mixed media.

Required qualifications: 
–The successful candidates will demonstrate a deep understanding of contemporary painting and drawing practices and contribute to the school’s interdisciplinary and forward-thinking vision.
–MFA in Painting, or related field preferred.
–At least three years of college/university level teaching experience beyond the T.A.
–Established and active art practice with a professional exhibition record.
–Demonstrated potential within the field of contemporary painting and knowledge of contemporary theory and practice.
–Successful teaching experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, varied technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities.
–Ability to teach across Studio Arts areas, introduce diverse and contemporary perspectives reflecting both national and international transformations in painting practice.
–Experience in curriculum development and program supervision.
–Commitment to working collegially and with individuals from diverse backgrounds is required.

Job specific qualifications:
–Demonstrated commitment to painting as a vibrant and diverse practice which may draw from a broad range of historically based and/or contemporary approaches appropriate to each position description.
–Familiarity with contemporary art practices and the ability to integrate traditional and contemporary approaches in teaching.
–Knowledge of art history as a foundation for forward-thinking explorations—both technical and creative.
–Strong communication and organizational skills and mentoring of students.
–An interest in working collaboratively within the School of Art, VPA, the University, and/or with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities: tenure track
The School of Art offers degrees in Illustration (BFA, MFA) and Studio Arts (BFA, BS, MFA) The successful candidate will:
–Possess excellence in research and active professional practice in the field of art and/or related fields.
–Teach introductory through advanced level courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in the Painting area, with a current teaching load of 3/2, subject to adjustment based on enrollment demand.
–Mentor and advise students.
–Pursue teaching excellence including course preparation and delivery to students in support of their learning and providing adequate assessment through critical feedback and mentoring.
–Contribute to course and curriculum development toward the schools continued academic excellence.
–Engage in service to the School, College, and University, through participation in meetings, committees, and recruitment.
–Cultivate and nurture interactions and opportunities in the professional field of art and/or related fields.
