TU/e Department of the Built Environment
Application deadline: September 15, 2024

Hours: Monday–Friday 8am–7pm
The Department of the Built Environment at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is pleased to announce two full-time positions at the rank of Full Professor of Architectural Research and Design and three part-time positions at the rank of Full Professor of Architectural Design within the unit of Architecture, Urban Design and Engineering (AUDE).
The unit AUDE (Architecture, Urban Design and Engineering) integrates (urban) architecture with engineering principles to address complex spatial challenges, focusing on creating high-quality built environments. With a commitment to both historical and theoretical discourse as well as the contemporary practice of architecture, AUDE approaches the built environment from a combined perspective where thinking and doing are mutually reinforcing. Such position is made explicit in both education and research. Ultimately, AUDE stands for critical and innovative attitudes toward social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental issues, leveraging scholarship, design and technology to propose inventive solutions for the pressing issues in our built environment.
Full Professor in Architectural Research and Design
The Department of the Built Environment at the Eindhoven University of Technology is searching for two professors with exceptional potential to elevate AUDE’s architecture research and education to the highest level. Successful candidates will develop a curiosity driven research agenda related to (spatial) design that is both grounded in the fundamental side of architecture as well as in the contemporary discourse and practice of architecture as engaged with broader societal challenges already being addressed by other units within the department (from housing to the transformation of existing buildings, from energy transition and climate change to sustainability and circularity). Beyond having a clear line of inquiry that contributes to the department’s ongoing engagement with these themes, the new professors are expected to collaborate with the existing chairs within AUDE as well as with chairs in other units in the department. The two new AUDE professors will stimulate multivocal research across the unit and the department, facilitating and supporting both ongoing and new research projects, by integrating and uniting the various approaches to architecture and the built environment already present within the unit. Successful candidates will, thus, be appointed based on their primary field of expertise but will be expected to bridge across the various disciplines represented in AUDE, as well as to establish collaborative research and pedagogical projects with other groups across the department (including the supervision of doctoral students). In addition to establishing greater connections, the new professors will also have the opportunity to help shape the future of AUDE by introducing new research fields and by improving the balance between education and research within the unit.
Teaching responsibilities will be focused on leading design studios and giving lectures for students in the department’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, teaching theoretical foundations, methodological skills and specialized knowledge in their field of expertise and area of research.
Candidates are expected to have experience in developing and managing design research projects, a clear pedagogical approach, and a doctorate degree (PhD) in architecture or related fields. They should demonstrate a record of outstanding creative research that advances the field of architecture. Additional qualifications include a commitment to excellence in teaching, the ability to lead a research group effectively, a strong national and international collaborative network, and the ability to raise research funding.
Full Professor in Architectural Design
The department is seeking three part-time professors for 5-year appointments who can support and expand upon the department’s mission of addressing pressing societal challenges and their implications in the built environment. This will be achieved by demonstrating a systemic, considered, and innovative approach through an architectural design and education agenda of contemporary relevance and urgency. The three positions are complementary and will emphasize original disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to architectural design that can address increasingly pressing societal issues.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop a 5-year design and education agenda that advances the current understanding of architectural practice and (spatial) design by engaging with broader societal challenges including (but not limited to) the housing crisis, adaptive reuse, energy transition, the climate crisis, sustainability, and circularity. Beyond having a clear line of design inquiry that contributes to the department’s ongoing engagement with these themes, the part-time professors are expected to collaborate and develop design assignments with various chairs within AUDE and the department. With their design agenda, the part-time professors will stimulate different approaches to (urban) architectural design, further strengthening the polyvocal approach to the built environment fostered within AUDE and the department.
Teaching responsibilities will be primarily focused on leading design studios, delivering lectures for the department’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, and supervising graduation projects (master theses) in architecture.
The ideal candidates will be internationally renowned figures in architecture practice, demonstrating a record of outstanding practice that advances the architectural discipline through creative inquiry. They should be effective and experienced teachers with clear pedagogical plans supported by practical and didactical teaching models that can contribute to a multidisciplinary environment. Additional qualifications include a commitment to excellence, the ability to connect across disciplines, leadership experience, a strong national and international collaborative network and, most importantly, the ability to inspire.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a portfolio of architectural design, statements of research and teaching interests and plans, a description of the field of expertise that you intend to add to AUDE, as well as a motivation letter. The closing date for applications is September 15, 2024.
The appointments are expected to start in spring or fall 2025.
