We have embraced spring at Cukrarna with a series of exhibitions that observe and explore the perception of the world. The exhibitions offer insights into human perception, its interdependence with the environment and the complexity of interpersonal relationships.
Mikhail Karikis: Communities, Voices, Ecologies
Until April 7, 2024
A new programme of video and film works has been launched in Cukrarna’s basement gallery space, starting with an exhibition by the artist Mikhail Karikis. During the exhibition, five video works will be shown, arranged in three time periods. In these video works, the artist observes the relationship between humans and the environment though the consequences of deindustrialisation and its societal legacies.
The video piece Sounds from Beneath was shown in the first part of the exhibition. The video work is a kind of ode to the labour and professional hardship of miners, a tribute to a disappearing profession and the identity of the working class in England.
The second part The Youth Trilogy presents three works in which young people spotlight the link between post-industrial heritage and ecology. All three works—Children of Unquiet, Ain’t Got No Fear and No Ordinary Protest—share the common motif of protest in their demands to confront the consequences of the past and find sustainable solutions to the challenges of the future. On view until March 17, 2024.
The exhibition concludes with a screening of the video SeaWomen, in which the preservation of a traditional profession can also be seen as an optimistic prediction of an ecologically conscious future. On view from March 19 to April 7, 2024.
Group exhibition of 20 Slovenian artists: Extended Vision
Until May 26, 2024
The group exhibition of 20 Slovenian artists shows works that share a common slant to man and his sensibility. The selected works offer different entry points into their work, by which they offer diverse perspectives for viewing.
Extended Vision is thematically linked to the phenomenon of perception. The exhibited works utilise the gaps in perception to intensify the experience of seeing. The word “expanded” in the title refers to the scientific realisation that seeing cannot be reduced to the sensory experience of the eye, as visual perception is an activity that involves the imagination. Artists: Marko Batista, Uršula Berlot, Beti Bricelj, Ksenija Čerče, Sandi Červek, Vuk Ćosić, DK, Dušan Fišer, Vadim Fiškin, Meta Grgurevič, Sanela Jahić, Danilo Jejčič, Peter Koštrun, Blažka Križan, Oto Rimele, Nejč Slapar, Nika Špan, Dušan Tršar, Vinko Tušek, Edvard Zajec.
Tarek Atoui: Standing Waves
Until June 2, 2024
Standing Waves offers an insight into the art practice of sound artist and electroacoustic composer Tarek Atoui. The artist’s spatial sonic installations challenge established ways of understanding sound and expand our listening experiences. In his works space, architecture, instruments and our bodies become both receivers and conductors.
The exhibition consists of handmade instruments, which are simultaneously objects and aural sculptures. The soundscape created is a delicate, ever-changing microcosm, imbued with a profusion of sonic textures evoked by a variety of materials, from stone and water to brass and wood. The artist’s sculptures are based on a reflection on the extraction or emission of sound through the organic materials used, while he incorporates electronic elements as a tool to explore the properties of these materials, their resonances and sonic behaviour.
The experimental composition The Wave takes centre stage, which is layered with sounds recorded at the ports of Abu Dhabi, Athens, and Singapore, joined by instruments developed for the WITHIN project. The composition is linked to listening devices from The Whisperers project. The exhibition includes a new version of the work 33 Soft Cells from the WITHIN project, a set of instruments designed as a result of a workshop with deaf and hard of hearing people.
Save the date
On June 19, 2024, three exhibitions will open simultaneously, presenting the work of Šejla Kamerić, Adrian Paci and Tobias Putrih.
