The London School of Economics and Political Science is accepting applications for its groundbreaking MSc City Design and Social Science, also known as the Cities Programme.
Focused on the relations between the social and the spatial within urban environments, this innovative and interdisciplinary programme places the challenges of city design and urban development in their social, economic, ecological and political contexts.
Launched in 1998, the programme supports the development of urban practitioners and scholars who can work across professional divides to have a transformative impact on cities as both social and built environments.
Based in the heart of London, it is unique as a studio-based master’s with a strong orientation both to practice and to social science. The programme attracts students from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds, reflecting the range of skills involved in urban policy, design and development today. Each year, around 40 percent of our student intake comes from architecture, urban design, planning or engineering, with around 60 percent coming from backgrounds in social science, business and economics, law, humanities, and the natural sciences.
LSE offers a distinctive opportunity to study at a world centre for teaching and research while enjoying the cultural, social and recreational facilities of one of the world’s greatest capital cities. The character of LSE is inseparable from its location, situated in the core of one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.
In our twelve-month master’s programme students will graduate with a well-rounded set of research, analytical and practical skills for the design, development and implementation of urban projects across the public, private and community sectors. And they will have developed the ability to work creatively and effectively across disciplinary boundaries.
Graduates find international career opportunities across the urban design, planning and development fields as designers and planners, project managers and consultants, researchers and entrepreneurs. The programme also boasts a vibrant alumni network which offers guidance and support.
