Between: the roads were active
April 30–May 6, 2022
Between is a series departing from music-based practices that temporarily rededicates the Kunstverein’s exhibition space into a stage for musicians, performers, and artists. Its third iteration is conceived by composer and artist Klein. Often blurring the lines between autobiographical and fantasy, Klein, through her performances, films, video games, and websites, creates a sensory world that melds reference points from pop culture and news media with personal associations. Unfolding over a week, this edition of Between entitled the roads were active is partly scripted, partly guided through sculpture, improvisation, text, and sound. The opening performance is a new play, in part recreating scenes from Klein’s 2021 feature-length film Care. It combines elements of choreographed movement and drama as a tool to unveil a portrait of social care.
The series Between was inaugurated in 2021 with a program conceived by Nguyen Phuong-Dan, followed by an event dedicated to the late U.S.-American composer Robert Ashley.
On and Off the Grid
February through December 2022
On and Off the Grid is a new program of presentations and events focusing on various form(at)s of publishing, taking place in the street level window display. The series conceives of “publishing” in a broad sense beyond and between conventional types of media, and provides a platform for the introduction, examination, and (re)negotiation of the materials and processes involved in publishing. Different agents such as artists, publishers, bookstores, designers, typographers, and authors are invited to occupy the window display for a period of six weeks at a time.
The format was inaugurated with Unbidden Tongues, which publishes previously produced yet relatively uncirculated work by cultural practitioners busy with questions surrounding civility and civic life—particularly in relation to language and its administration. The program continues with a performance and time-based collage by Eleanor Ivory Weber. Other guests thereafter include Will Holder, among others.
Writers Residency
The Writers Residency takes up the tradition of the town chronicler and aims to offer a temporary space for writing. The next resident from April through June 2022 will be Taylor Le Melle. They write, organize, and produce objects using their training in art history, architectural theory, and developmental psychology. Alongside their writing, recent work has included curating exhibitions, facilitating groups, and building infrastructures, among others. They are one of the founding directors of the artists’ workers cooperative not/nowhere, and a member of the publishing collective PSS. Le Melle is following Isabelle Sully, Quinn Latimer, Studio for Propositional Cinema, Alexandra Symons Sutcliffe, and Mahan Moalemi.
