Benedetto Bufalino: Laby-Foot

Within the framework of the 1+1 biennale, jointly organised by Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain and the Fonds Kirchberg, artist Benedetto Bufalino was invited to create a work of art for the green maze located in the Parc Central in Kirchberg, Luxembourg.

The artist’s approach is to invest the urban space, to play with the architecture of given spaces and to offer, with his funny or poetic art installations, an offbeat interpretation of reality. For the Parc Central in Kirchberg, Benedetto Bufalino designed the participatory installation Laby-Foot, a full-scale football field that invites you to play matches…in a plant labyrinth! Completely reinvented, diverted, this singular pitch is a space for experimentation, and it raises many questions concerning current rules of the game. With Laby-Foot, the round ball explores a new dimension: it gets lost and takes shortcut in a space which is somewhere between a maze and a football pitch.

Benedetto Bufalino, born in 1982, lives and works in France. During his artistic career revolving around the creation of temporary installations in public spaces, he has taken part in numerous events and festivals such as Un Été au Havre, Nuit Blanche and Voyage à Nantes, in France, as well as the Landscape Festival Praha, in the Czech Republic, and Concéntrico: International Architecture and Design Festival, in Spain. His creations have also been showcased by prestigious institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Musée d’art contemporain in Lyon and the National Museum of Singapore.

As was already the case in 2017 with the project Recto Verso by Wennig & Daubach and in 2019 with the installation Slow Teleport by Schweder + Shelley, Casino Luxembourg and the Fonds d’Urbanisation et d’Aménagement du Plateau de Kirchberg (Fonds Kirchberg) have again organised a competition upon invitation for this third edition of 1+1, a temporary artistic project which takes place every two years within the maze of the Parc Central.
