Three award-winning sculptors exhibit at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning
On November 14th Jytte Høy, Erland Knudssøn Madsen and Jesper Rasmussen received the 2008 honorary prize from the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl Nielsen Foundation, each receiving Dkk 500,000 (66,666 EUR) tax-free. The prize is the largest awarded in Denmark.

In addition to the considerable sum of money, the artists are rewarded with an exhibition at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in Copenhagen, from November 15th to December 7th, 2008. The exhibition shows past and present works by the three artists.

Jytte Høy, born 1951, focuses on inspiring bodily and visual sensations. Her works are often simple, but rich in insight. Humour, precision and perceptual presence characterises the work of Jytte Høy

Erland Knudssøn Madsen, born 1942, works with the traditional materials of sculpture – stone, wood and bronze. His sensuous, yet monumental, works can be seen as embodiments of concepts such as mind and love.

Jesper Rasmussen, born 1959, is preoccupied with space and architecture. What happens when we climb a staircase and observe everything from above? What happens to architecture when the windows are removed from a photograph of a building? What is our perception of space?

The foundation’s honorary prizes are awarded to musicians and composers in even-numbered years and to sculptors in odd-numbered. The prize was first awarded in 1959. Previous recipients are, among others, the sculptors Bjørn Nørgaard, Ingvar Cronhammer, Jørgen Haugen Sørensen, Elisabeth Toubro, Lone Høyer Hansen and Morten Stræde, as well as musicians and composers such as Palle Mikkelborg and Anne Øland. The prize is not awarded by application – it is awarded as a recognition and appreciation of previous work, and as an encouragement and aid to future work.
