Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present Being Here, a group show which will open on Thursday, 6 December. The show will feature works by Fred Bervoets, Armen Eloyan, Gelitin, Adrian Ghenie, Kati Heck, Jonathan Meese, Peter Rogiers, Rinus Van de Velde and Aaron van Erp.
Fred Bervoets (b.1942, Burcht, Belgium. Lives and works in Antwerp.) is one of the most well known Belgian painters of his generation. Stylistically, he is related to neo-expressionism. Moreover, he invented his very own method of realising large-scale etchings. Bervoets has exhibited extensively including solo shows at MuHKA, Antwerp and P.M.M.K., Ostend.
Armen Eloyan (b. 1966; Yerevan, Armenia. Lives and works in Zurich.), who states that his paintings are a reference to poetry, predominantly paints dramatic canvases in lush primary tones. His work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions worldwide, including Timothy Taylor Gallery, London; Galerie Bob van Orsouw, Zurich; Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London and A Vision of Central Europe, curated by Luc Tuymans, Bruges, 2010.
Gelitin is comprised of four artists. They met first in 1978, when they all attended a summer camp, and since then have been playing and working together. In 1993 they began to exhibit internationally. They live and work in Vienna.They have exhibited globally with museums and leading art galleries including solo shows at Hayward Gallery, London; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville, Paris; Galleria Massimo de Carlo, Milan; Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna; Gagosian Gallery, London; Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris / Miami; and Greene Naftali Gallery, New York.
Adrian Ghenie‘s (b. 1977; Baia-Mare, Romania. Lives and works in Cluj, Romania; London, and Berlin.) work draws from source material ranging from personal narratives to historical references to popular culture (e.g. David Lynch, Laurel and Hardy) to artistic connotations (e.g. Dada, Renaissance painting). Recent solo museum exhibitions include MCA Denver; S.M.A.K., Ghent, Belgium; and MNAC, Bucharest. Group exhibitions include Palazzo Strozzi, Florence and SF MOMA.
Kati Heck (b.1979, Düsseldorf. Lives and works in Antwerp.) concentrates mostly on painting, but sculpture, photography, performances and installations are also an important part of her work. She has exhibited globally with museums and leading art galleries, including solo shows at CAC Málaga; Mary Boone Gallery, New York; group shows at Saatchi Gallery, London; Bozar, Brussels; and National Art Museum of China, Beijing.
Exploring themes as revolution and the role and power of art, Jonathan Meese‘s (b. 1970, Tokyo. Lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg.) installations, paintings, sculptures, and performances emerge from the “Dictatorship of Art”. He has exhibited globally with museums and leading art galleries, including solo shows at Gem, The Hague; CAC Málaga; MOCA Miami; De Appel Center for Contemporary Art, Amsterdam; group shows at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; MARTa Herford, Herford, Germany; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Saatchi Gallery, London; and MoMA PS1, New York.
Peter Rogiers‘s (b.1967, Antwerp. Lives and works in Oud-Heverlee, Belgium.) ironic-expressive sculptures hover between abstraction and figuration, combining both a tremendous craftmanship and an innovative visual language. His work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions worldwide, including Galerie Thomas Schulte, Berlin; De Garage, Mechelen, Belgium; S.M.A.K., Ghent, Belgium; Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles; and Galerie Richard, New York.
Rinus Van de Velde‘s (b. 1983, Leuven, Belgium. Lives and works in Antwerp.) practice consists of black-and-white charcoal drawings on canvas based on photographs. For his recent works on canvas, Van de Velde often re-enacts found footage or stages nonexistent scenes in self-made photographs, which serve as source material for narrative drawings in which the artist is the protagonist. Van de Velde has exhibited extensively including solo shows at CAC Málaga; Patrick Painter, Los Angeles; Galerie Zink, Berlin; and Tegenboschvanvreden, Amsterdam.
Aaron van Erp (b. 1978, Veghel, the Netherlands. Lives and works in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.), most known for his dark, passionate paintings, has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and museum shows, including solo shows at Gemeentemuseum, The Hague; Sperone Westwater, New York; Museum Der Stadt, Ratingen, Germany; and group shows at De Pont Tilburg, the Netherlands; and Museum MARTa Herford.
