Presented at Museo Jumex in Mexico City, the 89plus Americas Marathon will take place Saturday February 8 from 10am to 11pm and will bring emerging practitioners from different disciplines together with world-renowned artists and thinkers.
Cofounded by Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist, 89plus is a long term, international, multiplatform research project that investigates the generation of innovators born in or after 1989. Without forecasting artistic trends or predicting future creation, 89plus manifests itself through panels, books, periodicals and exhibitions, bringing together individuals from a generation whose voices are only starting to be heard, yet which accounts for almost half of the world’s population.
Marked by several paradigm-shifting events, the year 1989 saw the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the start of the post-Cold War period; the introduction of the World Wide Web and the beginning of the universal availability of the Internet. Positing a relationship between these world-changing events and creative production at large, 89plus introduces the work of some of this generation’s most inspiring protagonists.
The 89plus Americas Marathon: Autoconstrucción is named after Abraham Cruzvillegas’ dynamic project, which celebrates collaboration and improvisation as means to create new social relations and hybrid realities. The Marathon gathers a diverse cross-generational group of artists, writers, architects, filmmakers, musicians, designers, activists, economists, journalists, technologists and innovators to analyze the impact that complex notions of ground-up, collaborative tactics have had in the way we think and work. This 13-hour marathon will unfold through interviews, presentations, panels, performances and music sets that focus on a generation that over the last couple of years has already been changing the cultural, economic and political context of Mexico and the Americas at large.
Since an introductory panel held in January 2013 at the DLD—Digital, Life, Design conference in Munich, 89plus has conducted research in Hong Kong and Miami with Art Basel’s Salon series, and in New York through the 89plus Colony Conference at MoMA PS1. Additionally, 89plus has developed a series of residencies with various partners internationally including the Park Avenue Armory in New York and agnès b./ Tara Expeditions, as well as the Re Rebaudengo Serpentine Grants in collaboration with Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, the Serpentine Galleries, and DIS Magazine. Most recent projects include the 89plus Marathon at London’s Serpentine Sackler Gallery and the inaugural 89plus exhibition, 89plus / Poetry will be made by all! currently at LUMA/Westbau in Zurich.
The Marathon series was conceived by Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist in 2006 and is deeply intertwined with the annual Serpentine Galleries Pavilion Commission, launched by Director Julia Peyton-Jones in 2000.
The 89plus Americas Marathon is co-organized by Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, Colección Isabel y Agustín Coppel (CIAC) and Fundación Alumnos47, a joint venture project working to promote cultural development through multidisciplinary practice in the arts. Coordinating this project in Mexico City are Patrick Charpenel, Director, and José Esparza Chong Cuy, Research, from Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo.
