15–19 October 2014
Frieze Masters Talks 2014 will feature conversations between renowned contemporary artists and the curators of historical museums from around the world. A fair dedicated to art from ancient to modern, Frieze Masters will take place 15 to 19 October 2014 in The Regent’s Park, London.
The 2014 participants include William Kentridge with Ernst Vegelin van Claerbergen, Head of the Courtauld Gallery in London; Phyllida Barlow with Luke Syson, Curator in Charge of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; and Edmund de Waal with Paulus Rainer, Deputy Head of Kunstkammer and Treasury at Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. A new panel, “Collecting Beyond Contemporary,” will be chaired by Wim Pijbes, Directorof the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, joined by collectors including Marguerite Hoffman.
Frieze Masters Talks provides a platform for contemporary artists to discuss the history of art and its role in their work. In their conversations with museum curators, artists respond, on both a personal and intellectual level, to specific collections of art. Discussions often extend beyond the artists’ formative influences, to consider the museums’ programming and methods of display, as well as the continuing significance of historical art in contemporary practice.
New to the Frieze Masters Talks programme is ”Collecting Beyond Contemporary.” Chaired by Wim Pijbes, Director of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, this panel will bring together international collectors whose approach to acquiring and displaying their holdings looks beyond conventional limitations of chronology, geography and medium.
Frieze Masters Talks is programmed by Jasper Sharp, Adjunct Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and is supported by Gucci, new Associate Sponsor of Frieze Masters 2014. For the third consecutive year, Frieze Masters is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.
