arteBA, Buenos Aires’ art fair, invites galleries to submit applications for the Main Section or Barrio Joven for the next edition of the fair, set to take place from May 24 to 27, 2018.
In 2017, arteBA received over 300 curators, collectors and arts professionals; the event concluded with a notable increase in gallery sales and a new record for institutional acquisitions: more than 60 works were acquired by local and international museums thanks to support from businesses and individual patrons.
For this year’s edition, the Buenos Aires fair will incorporate a new category for participating galleries called Stage, oriented toward the Main Section’s youngest galleries.
The application form for arteBA 2018 can be completed online prior to Tuesday, October 24 using the IT Gallery platform here.
Main Section
An autonomous selection committee made up by Ana María Battistozzi (art critic and independent curator, Buenos Aires), Orly Benzacar (Director of Ruth Benzacar Galería de Arte and President of Meridiano, Buenos Aires), Eduardo Brandão (Director of Vermelho gallery, São Paulo) and Sabine Schmidt (Director of PSM gallery, Berlin) will evaluate galleries’ proposals and select the participants for arteBA 2018.
Stage
This new category will group together a maximum of ten young galleries in stands of up to 50 m2. Galleries having opened less than five years ago, representing young artists and participating in arteBA for the first time may apply, as may those who come from the Barrio Joven section. These proposals will be evaluated by the same selection committee as the Main Section.
Cabinet
A specially highlighted section within each gallery showing one or several emblematic works by a single modern or contemporary artist. This format is a way for arteBA to offer public or private collections and institutions works that meet with their needs and interests. A Consulting Committee formed by Ana María Battistozzi (art critic and independent curator, Buenos Aires), João Fernandes (Deputy Director of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid), and Patrick Charpenel (curator and Executive Director of the Museo del Barrio, Mexico City/New York) will be in charge of the selection.
Barrio Joven
Barrio Joven is a platform for new galleries, spaces and alternative venues for the exhibition and sale of contemporary art, presenting emerging Latin American artists not yet established at the Fair. This section’s proposals stand out due to their originality, risk taking, and experimental nature. Spaces and galleries can include performance projects or actions in their applications.
The selection of proposals will be carried out by a curatorial team made up of Miguel A. López (Chief Curator at TEOR/éTica, San José de Costa Rica, and co-founder of Bisagra, Lima) and Santiago Villanueva (artist and curator, Buenos Aires); the team will then oversee each of the projects selected to participate in arteBA 2018.
