NTU School of Art, Design and Media (NTU ADM) and NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) announce a new Postgraduate Programme:
Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices (Master of Arts, one year, course based)
Start in August 2018
Application deadline: March 11, 2018
This newly created one-year MA programme in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices prepares graduates for professional positions in the highly complex and diverse museum Iandscape, and in the ever-expanding spaces of the curatorial.
With a focus on Southeast Asia, this course-based study programme places emphasis on the theoretical and practical challenges of curating contemporary and historic art and culture, and fosters a deeper understanding of the dynamic field of museum studies. In both areas, experienced practitioners provide insight into the required skills of these fast-growing sectors.
Unique in its combination of classical museum and heritage studies, together with new curatorial theories and practices, the programme allows the candidates to choose between three streams: museum studies, curatorial practice, or a combination of both. In this way, the programme offers students the chance to get familiar with a wide range of skills, which will resonate with the multifaceted fields of work.
This programme is intended for the professional development of individuals who want to further their knowledge in curatorship, collecting artifacts, or to engage in cultural infrastructures. The programme also offers the opportunity to pursue a practicum in institutions or organisations in Singapore, the region, and with other established partners in our network.
International faculty include: Professor Ute Meta Bauer (Contemporary Curating), Asst Prof Marc Gloede (Curating Time-based Art and Media), Asst Prof Sophie Goltz (Curating Art in Public Space and Critical Spatial Practice), Asst Prof Yin Ker (Southeast Asian Art Histories), Asst Prof Michelle Lim (Exhibition Histories and Curatorial Narratives), Assoc Prof Laura Longo (Museums and Heritage Studies), Asst Prof Sujatha Meegma (Global Art Histories), Assoc Prof Laura Miotto (Exhibition Design and Museography), and Assoc Prof Michael Walsh (Research Methodology).
Spaces of the Curatorial (Master of Arts [Research], two years, and Doctor of Philosophy)
Start in August 2018
Application deadline: November 15, 2017
This unique academic programme in Southeast Asia seeks candidates who wish to pursue intensive research within the framework of contemporary critical discourse in the wide-ranging fields of contemporary art and curatorial practices. The Centre itself is dedicated to the field of Spaces of the Curatorial, including curating within public and private art institutions, and also cultivates a deeper understanding of new areas of study such as Curating the City and Curating Time-based Art and Media. The programme is open to other suggested topics by prospective candidates that relate to the NTU CCA Singapore’s and the NTU ADM’s subjects of study and research.
The programme will allow MA students as well as PhD candidates to pursue interdisciplinary research within an environment in close proximity to the NTU CCA Singapore’s curatorial programmes as well as its wide network of artists-, curators-, writers-in-residence and art communities and institutions in Singapore and Southeast Asia. While the main supervisor will be an experienced member of NTU’s Faculty of Art, Design and Media, additional supervisors can be selected according to the specificity of the research subject.
