Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC) announces the launch of a new Master of Fine Arts in Industrial Design. This exciting new program is envisioned to develop students’ skills in articulating concept through form and use. Creating products that focus on the end-user experience, students will engage pragmatic yet innovative materials and processes to design objects that are tailored to individual needs.
As a college renowned for material experimentation, OCAC is perfectly positioned to prepare students for the growing field of innovative manufacturing. The MFA is a natural progression of OCAC’s rich tradition of problem solving through making combined with modern technologies and the mentor-based, iterative process to explore new ways of designing for the evolving contemporary lifestyle.
“Portland, where the handmade, locally sourced, and ethically environmental are highly valued, is the ideal location for this new program,” says Denise Mullen, president of the college. “The recent rise of creative industry start-ups, coupled with the established corporations that function in the materials, design and technology space, create a perfect landscape for our students and their work.” OCAC is partnering with local and international businesses, further fueling a creative industry that generates proactive responses to a changing global environment.
The program leads the charge toward innovative and responsible solutions for utilitarian objects, particularly creative product design for small and growing businesses. An arena for invention where students are encouraged to investigate and reinterpret the dynamic that exists between objects, users, and corresponding markets, the MFA in Industrial Design focuses on building sustainable relationships with consumers and the community.
Through OCAC’s individualized teaching method, students have the opportunity to explore areas of study that equip them with expanded technical and material expertise to transform concepts into tangible objects. This nexus of technology, engineering and materials places students at the leading edge of creating new types of products for new types of lives.
