The Rome Quadriennale 2020, titled FUORI (OUT) curated by Sarah Cosulich and Stefano Collicelli Cagol will be open to the public from October 30, 2020 at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. A major show dedicated to Italian art featuring 43 artists over 4,000 sqm of exhibition space and 300 artworks.

FUORI (OUT) proposes a new reading of Italian art from the 1960s to today, with particular focus on the younger generations. The exhibition interweaves the history of La Quadriennale di Roma with the need to recognize alternative narrations beyond the predominant ones. FUORI, which is the result of three years of research, is a transgenerational and multidisciplinary exhibition aimed at rediscussing the very concept of artistic canon, favoring a polyphonic vision of history.

The exhibition itinerary is crossed by three lines of research: the Palace as a metaphor for the relationship between art and power; Desire, for the seductive ability that has always accompanied art; the Incommensurable, namely what leads artists to fully embrace their obsessions, exploring the unspeakable.

FUORI overcomes the boundaries and categories characterizing disciplines, media, sex and gender, presenting cross-overs between the visual arts and drama, dance, cinema, fashion, architecture, music and design. The project-oriented approach of those who work in different disciplines; glam with its power of seduction and enchantment; erotic desire explored in all its directions and forms; the disturbing realities present in the imaginaries of young artists; all emerge as powerful impulses in the research of Italian art. The exhibition feeds on research into feminist, queer and decolonial studies, whose perspectives have helped to question the univocal vision of History and its narrative.

FUORI is an invitation to think outside the box, to assume an eccentric—off-centered—position, to adopt an oblique look based on a mutual relationship with otherness.

The Quadriennale di Roma is the national institution that promotes Italian contemporary art. Its name is linked to the Quadriennale d’Arte, a periodic exhibition on contemporary Italian art. 

The Quadriennale is a foundation owned by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, the Municipality of Rome and the Lazio Region. It was founded in 1927 as a periodic exhibition.
