Isn’t It a Beautiful World is a short film that, through lipsyncing, depicts the traumatizing stories of queer performers Soroya, Harry, and Kenya, and their emotional journey to adulthood. The film takes the audience on a journey through metaphorical locations to explore themes of loneliness, anxiety, mental health, and recovery, all common issues within the LGBT+ community. The performers lip-sync to Delia Derbyshire’s “Falling,” a collection of reassembled interviews of people describing their dreams arranged in a setting of pure electronic sounds. The locations, including an abandoned school, an old police station, and a dilapidated mobile home depict a mix between childhood ideals and loneliness/isolation.
This screening is part of Tongue Takeover, the first chapter of the online program Takeover curated by Julian Ross for e-flux Video & Film, and unfolding in six chapters between September 22 and December 15, 2022, with the films and videos of each chapter streaming for two weeks.
