Memories for Forgetfulness Elsewhere | I: Postcards from Afar Ça sera beau (From Beyrouth with Love)
Wael Noureddine
2005

29 Minutes

Date
Repeat: Wednesday, February 16

Beirut—or maybe any city, anywhere, that is at war with itself. Here, no conflict is ever resolved, no wall is ever repaired. In this city full of holes, explosions resonate better. Those who live there have a choice between the army and religion—or between religion and the army. I visit some friends, and gather their suicidal testaments. No one goes anywhere. I cross my city in every possible way, day and night… Time doesn’t change. If I have to shoot this movie again, I will do it exactly the same way.

Wael Noureddine’s Ça sera beau is presented within Postcards from Afar, the first of five chapters in Memories for Forgetfulness Elsewhere, an online film program curated by Irmgard Emmelhainz for e-flux Video & Film. The program streams in five thematic group screenings each two weeks long, and will be accompanied by two live discussions.

Return to I. Postcards from Afar

Waël Noureddine (b. 1978, Lebanon) is a writer, poet, and filmmaker. He began his professional career as a journalist with the Lebanese newspaper Annahar. His films deal with real-life situations in literary and critical terms. They try to capture the physical and mental scars of conflict, while resisting subjugation and submission. In 2002, he directed and produced his first documentary film, Chez Nous à Beyrouth, which premiered at the French Cinémathèque as part of the Avant-Garde program. His films have screened in numerous festivals and museums worldwide, and they include the experimanetal documntary Ça sera beau (From Beyrouth with Love) (2005), the documentary or a hell trip July Trip filmed during the July Israel-Lebanon 2006 war, A Film Far Beyond God (2008) shot in Yemen about the pre-Islamic god Hubal, and the short films L’Histoire de la drogue and Abu Dhabi: An Architectural Critique (2009). Currently Noureddine is either farming crocodiles or preparing a new film, nobody really knows.
