Só no Carnaval reveals the many complexities surrounding conventional gender roles in Brazilian society. In particular, the film highlights deeply ingrained stereotypes that men have, until today, about what it means to be a woman. As such, Só no Carnaval proves to be a riveting and shocking carnaval film, encapsulating Eunice and Regina’s ever present feminist gaze behind the camera and proving that the yearly festive carnaval celebration is a fertile ground for filmic explorations of the contradictions in Brazilian society.

This screening is part of Theater of Life, the fifth chapter of the film program Queer Strategies and Tentacles, curated by Rosa Barotsi and Zairong Xiang, and unfolding in eight chapters between November 25th, 2024 and March 2, 2025, with the films of each chapter streaming for two weeks.
