Takeover: II. Voice Takeover East/West
Su-Chen Hung
1984-1987

3 Minutes

Date
Repeat: Dec 15-16 ET

East/West is a videotape with two channels of sound, based on the artist’s citizenship interview. The video image is of a mouth split in half, one half speaking English, and one half speaking Chinese. Occasionally, the two halves of the mouth come together to create a whole. The half-mouths reflect the artist’s struggle and conflict in reconciling two different cultures.

This screening is part of Voice Takeover, the second chapter of the online program Takeover curated by Julian Ross for e-flux Video & Film, and unfolding in six chapters between September 22 and December 15, 2022, with the films and videos of each chapter streaming for two weeks.

Su-Chen Hung grew up in Taiwan and has lived in San Francisco since 1977. Studying Chinese Literature at Tunghai University in Taiwan, she later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She earned her BFA in Photography and her MFA in Filmmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute. Hung’s work is simple and elegant. Sometimes intensely personal, sometimes a dialogue with cultural and social subjects, the work always begins with a conceptual and visual core idea. Both her studio work and her large-scale public art projects have a meditative aura. She creates places of contemplation and repose.
