Black Sun X: Casper, Witch, and Handstanderus traces the trajectory of catastrophes from their nascence to the present. It weaves together fragments of loosely connected narratives under “Black Sun X” that implies constantly swelling catastrophes. This work consists of three narratives: Casper who was a beloved cartoon character in popular culture, a witch-hunt that occurred during the transition period between feudalism and capitalism in the wake of the Black Death (and continues in today’s disturbing situation); and Handstanderus who are a group of people trying to find new ways of thinking through plants.

Black Sun X: Casper, Witch, and Handstanderus is one of seven shorts presented by the 18th edition of the Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul – EXiS, as part of a special selection on e-flux Video & Film, streaming for two weeks from October 28 to Novermber 11 and accompanied by a conversation between EXiS 2021 programmer Inhan Cho and e-flux’s Lukas Brasiskis. See the full program here.

The program is part of the series Festival Forum on e-flux Video & Film, presenting collaborations with established and emerging moving-image festivals from around the world.

Instead of recognizing a set of circumstances that we are facing as an individual event, Ji Hye Yeom attempts to find forces operating on the other side. In other words, rather than looking at the surface, Yeom imagines the invisible force which originated the happenings in the present. Yeom utilizes science, history, philosophy, religion, oral tradition, faith, etc. as tools of imagination and research. Through exploration of new connecting links created in the point where the boundaries of past and the present, experience and memory, an image and a dream, or a legend and a narrative blend and blur, Yeom proposes an alternative perspective on the world and new methods of speech.
