September 27–October 10, 2020

Join us on e-flux Video & Film for an online screening of The Otolith Group’s Medium Earth (2013), on view from Sunday, September 27 through Saturday, October 10, 2020.

The Otolith Group explores the earthquake endangered geology of California as well as the spatialized unconscious of capitalist modernism. Through pictures that appeal to the senses and the voice of a “medium” whose body is sensitive to seismic occurrences, the film listens to California’s deserts, translates what the stones write, and decodes the calligraphy of the earth’s crevices.

Medium Earth is presented here as one of five films in Part Four | Reading the Earth: Vibrant Matter and Human Hubris, the fourth of six programs in the online film and discussion series Ecology After Nature: Industries, Communities, and Environmental Memory programmed by Lukas Brasiskis for e-flux Video & Film.

Ecology After Nature runs from August 14 through November 8, 2020. The films in Part Four will screen for two weeks, and subsequent parts will follow bi-weekly, with new films screened every other Sunday.

The Otolith Group is an award-winning artist-led collective and organization founded by Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun in 2002, that integrates film- and videomaking, artists’ writing, workshops, exhibition curation, publication, and the development of public platforms for the close readings of the image in contemporary society. The Group’s work is formally engaged with research-led projects exploring legacies and potentialities of artist-led proposals around the document and the essay film, the archive, the aural and sonic mediums, speculative futures, and science fiction.
