On January 30th the first coronavirus cases appeared in Rome, and Italy suspended all flights from China. On that day I wrote my first message to my family regarding coronavirus, worried. I looked for face masks, but there were none to be found anywhere. On February 4th while in Lausanne for work, I managed to find masks near the train station and bought what I thought would be enough at the time—ten masks—and wore one for the first time on the train back to Milano. On February 27th the cases rose to 650 and I was unable to return to Bethlehem and got stranded in Rome. On February 29th, cases rose to 1128 with 29 people dead. By March 7th, Italy was reporting more deaths from the virus than any other country in the world. By March 19th the death toll in Italy surpassed China’s, and on March 24th—when I filmed this—the daily death toll stood at 743.

We continue to be under Europe’s strictest and longest coronavirus lockdown. I have been without any human contact since March 1st. I am separated from my family, my friends, and my dogs. I am alone in a flat with only one window, and that window is my only connection to the world outside. That window has become my world. It faces a wall whose simulacra of two windows only emphasize isolation. Any hoped-for human contact here will have to come sideways.

This film is part of From My Window / From Your Window, a joint series of films, conversations, and letters organized by e-flux and the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.

As poetic as it is political and biographical, Emily Jacir’s work investigates silenced histories, exchange, translation, transformation, and resistance. Jacir has built a complex and compelling oeuvre through a diverse range of media and methodologies that include unearthing historical material, performative gestures, and in-depth research. She investigates personal and collective movement through time and space and its implications on the physical and social experience. Drawing on rituals such as dances, processions, and games, the artist charts the way space, collectivity, and memories are claimed. Jacir has been actively involved in education in Palestine since 2000 and is deeply invested in creating alternative spaces for knowledge production internationally. She has been honored for her work internationally, including an honorary doctorate from NCAD in Dublin, Ireland (2023); an American Academy of Arts and Letters prize (2023); the Andrew W. Mellon Rome Prize Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome (2015); the Alpert Award (2011); Hugo Boss Prize, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008); and the Golden Lion, Venice Biennale (2007). She is the founder of Dar Yusuf Nasri Jacir for Art and Research in Bethlehem.
