Janus is a cross-disciplinary art magazine founded in 1999, known for its distinctive double-fronted covers and innovative approach to art publishing. After issue 19 in 2005, the magazine was briefly paused, but Jan Fabre soon reconnected with former collaborators to breathe new life into the project. In 2006, the non-profit organization Janus was established by Astrid and Charlotte Bonduel, Frank Maes, and Nicola Setari, who took on the role of the magazine’s new publishers. The magazine’s motto, “Anywhere, Anytime, here, now,” is inspired by the omnipresence of the Roman god Janus, reflecting its commitment to staying relevant and adaptable to the evolving landscape of contemporary art.
Janus is published twice a year, with each issue divided into thematic and special sections. The thematic section explores a specific concept or artistic trend, while the special section features contributions from five curators, each presenting an artist they have recently worked with. Edited by a group of young editors from Belgium and Italy, the magazine continues to offer in-depth interviews, critical essays, and showcases of contemporary art, providing readers with fresh perspectives on visual arts, literature, and performance. Through its high-quality content and dedication to innovation, Janus remains an important voice in the art world.
