Far from major urban art centers, in a breathtaking location beneath the vast blue sky of the Argentine Andes, lies the world’s first James Turrell Museum, which opened in 2009. Situated at 2,300 meters above sea level on the side of a mountain, the museum is part of the Hess Art Collection at Donald M. Hess’s vineyard, Colomé. Here, Turrell completed his largest Skyspace to date, an observatory with an open roof, designed to interact with the changing light. The piece is particularly striking at sunrise and sunset, when the subtle orchestration of light reaches its fullest intensity. The museum showcases several other of Turrell’s immersive installations, allowing visitors to experience his exploration of light and space in this unique high-altitude setting.
