The documenta Institute is an international research center for questions concerning the exhibition of contemporary art and at the same time a place of exchange about the art of our present. At the home of documenta, the documenta Institute is also committed to the concerns of the documenta project. It takes the history and the present of documenta as a starting point for transdisciplinary research about the relationship between art, society and politics. With its interventions, the Institute addresses local, regional and international publics and uses “public reasoning” formats to address the issues and concerns of contemporary art.
The documenta Institute has been developed in cooperation between the State of Hesse, the City of Kassel, documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH, and the University of Kassel with Kunsthochschule Kassel. In 2020, Professor Dr. Heinz Bude was appointed as the Founding Director. As part of the Institute’s development, three tenure-track professorships were established in 2021 with funding from the State of Hesse.
