Akademie einer anderen Stadt (Academy of Another City) was an innovative art platform initiated under the artistic direction of Ute Vorkoeper as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Hamburg. Operating from 2009 to 2010, the project engaged with the dynamic intersections between art, urban development, and community. It focused on fostering dialogue and participation through a variety of artistic formats, exhibitions, and public interventions that aimed to engage diverse audiences in the cultural evolution of Hamburg.
The Academy was both a cultural initiative and an educational concept, promoting sustainable and creative engagement with the present-day city. In 2009, under the theme Signs of Respect, it developed a range of formats that connected international art with local art projects from Hamburg’s schools and neighborhoods. The platform created spaces for the public to interact with art in various forms, from large exhibitions to film screenings, performances, and guided tours, with a special emphasis on integrating people from different cultural backgrounds.
