16 Beaver is the address of a space located in downtown Manhattan, New York initiated and independently-run by artists since 1999. As a collectively-sustaining project, each resident maintains the space by using it for their work and other related activities. A lot of its organizing happens through 16 Beaver’s mailing lists and blogs. Ever since its opening, 16 Beaver has become a place of support for those involved in art, politics, education, as well as a multiplicity of other contexts and fields of activity, allowing them to share their research, ask daring questions, and express their concerns and struggles. 16 Beaver exists as a platform to present, produce, and discuss various artistic, cultural, economic, and political projects. Simultaneously, it acts as a site for exchange that can lead to actions, which can be collectively debated and rethought. Since 1999, 16 Beaver has been known for its regular organizing of the Reading Group, a series of presentations, readings, discussions, screenings, and panels with/by artists, curators, thinkers, writers, and activists.
