Construction and Vision

The Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (TMoFA) was officially established in January, 2018. It is a level 2 independent unit under the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Taoyuan City Government. TMoFA dedicates to the development of Taoyuan’s art by applying its diverse functions to link the city and the communities, local and abroad. With foundation of the city’s culture, an international vision and future imagination, TMoFA as a driving engine of art promoting will form a creative base for innovating experiment and cultural development.

The architectural and landscape design of TMoFA echoes the regional features: The Land of a Thousand Ponds, and combines aquatic views and green zones with history integrated. It is an upcoming culture landmark. At its early establishment, TMoFA is consisting of a Major Museum and several subsidiary art centers. The Major Museum located on lot 13, Qinpu area of Zhongli District is currently under construction. The two subsidiary art centers are Henshan Calligraphy Art Center located in Dayuan District and Taoyuan Children’s Art Center located on lot 12, the former has  successively opened in October, 2021, and the latter is planned to opened in April, 2024, while connected to the Major Museum with an air corridor.

The architecture of TMoFA

The Major Museum is located in Qinpu, which is close to Taoyuan High Speed Rail Station and A19 station on the Taoyuan Metro line. The total surface area is approximately 40,142 m2 (including underground parking space), with five floors above and two floors below ground level. The appearance of the Museum is an original hill design, including three types of space: the cube, the mezzanine, and the surface which consisted of trees, observation decks, and outdoor platform. Inside the building are exhibition venues which are designed for permanent exhibition, special exhibition and collection, stations for educational promotion, library, administrative office, museum shop and public facilities.

The architect designed this art hill with the concept of “architecture of landscape, exhibition hall of amusement”. The Major Museum will not only carry the missions of collection research, art exhibition and educational promotion, but also apply its multiple functions to bring the natural surrounding and community together, and form an art field closing to life.
