On 5 and 6 June, the Creative Days will once again bring together national and international creative professionals in Venna. Initiated by the Vienna Business Agency, the event is part of the international startup festival ViennaUP. The conference will focus on the interactions between technological innovations, social change, and the creative industries. The highlight of the two-day programme, which includes talks, workshops, and networking opportunities, is a masterclass and keynote by Barnaby Steel, digital art pioneer and Creative Director of the groundbreaking Experiential Art Collective Marshmallow Laser Feast in London. Steel will give participants insights into his creative process and current projects. On the first day, all events will take place at the Biofabrique Vienna on the grounds of the Klima Biennale. On the second day, the schedule includes tours to various Viennese cultural institutions such as the Wiener Festwochen and Wien Modern.
Keynotes and talks by Klimentina Milenova (CIVA Festival), Zeynep Aksöz and Mark Balzar (OpenFields), a workshop with Garnett Lee, and exclusive networking sessions will provide further inspiration. The Creative Days Vienna 2024 also mark the start of Content Vienna, the competition for digital design. Barnaby Steel opens up a new universe of perception
Barnaby Steel is a pioneer of the contemporary digital art scene. As a co-founder of the London-based collective Marshmallow Laser Feast, he pushes the boundaries of art and technology with his immersive video and sound installations. His virtual reality production “Evolver”, produced by Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) and narrated by multiple Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, caused a sensation at the 2022 Tribeca Festival in New York City. The multimedia installation was also presented during the immersive part of this year’s 77th Cannes Film Festival. Virtual reality is an important tool for Steel, which he uses to sensitise people to nature and the environment. In his Experience Design Masterclass on 5 June at 2 p.m. at the Biofabrique Vienna, Barnaby Steel will provide an insight into the collective’s latest work and thus herald the start of the Creative Days Vienna 2024.
Participants from fields such as architecture, gaming, design, music, and the visual arts will be met with rare networking opportunities and inspiring insights. The ensuing discussions will cover questions relating to digital technologies and the future of cultural experiences, such as what opportunities art, culture, and technology innovations can present for social and ecological challenges. The extensive first-day programme, which takes place at the Biofabrique Vienna, includes an augmented reality workshop with Artivive, as well as a talk and a performance by the interdisciplinary architecture studio Open Fields, in which sustainable scenarios for the future relating to climate and artificial intelligence will be explored.
On the second day, tours of various Viennese cultural institutions, such as the Wiener Festwochen and Wien Modern, will offer a look behind the scenes of festival operations. Talks and screenings with the Vienna Media Art Festival CIVA at Belvedere 21, curated networking sessions at Brick-15, as well as a Games Publishing Workshop in collaboration with Subotron, and two parties will round off the two-day programme.
