The University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart combines its long tradition as the oldest university of music in Baden-Württemberg with contemporary offerings that meet the professional requirements of today’s cultural sector. Whether early music, classical and romantic, new and contemporary music, whether puppet theatre, symphony, opera and drama, whether electronic music, jazz or organ playing - the house unites everything under one roof. With a good 550 opera and theatre performances, symphony, choral, chamber music and soloist concerts, it plays a decisive role in shaping Stuttgart’s musical life and the region, above all through innovation and programme diversity. Eight hundred students from 46 nations are taught by about 120 professors, lecturers and more than 150 assistant lecturers. CAMPUS GEGENWART is a state center which focusses on contemporary topics, creating a space for networking, both in practice and reflection. It is part of the HMDK Stuttgart, and functions in cooperation with the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. CAMPUS GEGENWART brings a focus on contemporary topics and artistic practices to the everyday life of the HMDK, an institution which up to now has often been marked by students’ focus on specialization in a respective subject.
