The University of Kansas Department of Visual Art is committed to fostering an environment that encourages critical and aesthetic engagement through the teaching of conceptual strategies and technical skills. Our mission is to provide both undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional and diverse faculty, facilities, equipment, and technologies that encompass both traditional and emerging media within a comprehensive curriculum. We encourage innovation and interdisciplinary activities to support our students’ development into professional artists and arts educators who are makers, critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and life-long learners.
Situated within a major research and teaching university, The Department of Visual Art connects students tothe vast academic resources at the University of Kansas to inform and deepen their creative vision. Our students can engage with resources such as the Spencer Museum of Art, the Hall Center for Humanities, affiliate faculty across the university as well as a broader arts community in Lawrence, the greater Kansas City region and beyond.
