UmArts is the Research Centre for Architecture, Design and the Arts at Umeå University in Northern Sweden, established in 2021. The centre is creating an exciting interdisciplinary arts research environment in the visual arts, architecture, design and creative studies in partnership with Bildmuseet. Working within the regional context of Northern Sweden as well as nationally and internationally. This research environment is focused on: developing critical knowledge in artistic research; establishing interdisciplinary research between artistic and other fields; and supporting public engagement with the work and its impact.
UmArts believes that intellectual and creative life is fundamentally social, and that research and creative practices develop in relation to others and at the intersections of different knowledges, perspectives and experiences. Therefore the programme is based on a series of working groups on specific themes that bring together researchers from different fields to share and discuss their work. The groups form the basis of new reading groups, collaborative field research international projects. UmArts also supports interdisciplinary post-doctoral research.
