With 22,000 students and seven faculties, the University of Potsdam, founded in 1991, is the largest institution of higher education in Brandenburg. It is also the only institution training teachers in the state. Seven faculties form the pillars of the institution: the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Human Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, the Digital Engineering Faculty, jointly established by the University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute, the Law Faculty, and the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The training of teachers for the subjects art and aesthetic education takes place in two sections at the University of Potsdam: one for elementary school art education and one for the teaching of art for secondary education level I or II. Perceiving, creating, and reflecting are the central aspects of the aesthetic education of future art teachers at our Art and Aesthetic Education unit. In proximity to the vibrant and creative city of Berlin, our aim is to familiarize young students with the diversity of artistic creation and aesthetic activities. Some parts of the university are located in historical buildings in Sanssouci Park and at the New Palace and have been designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
