Each year NXTHVN welcomes seven artists, two curators, and nine New Haven high school students to its annual fellowship and apprenticeship programs. Founded by Titus Kaphar and Jason Price, the core principles of NXTHVN’s mission are: mentorship, collaboration, and professional development. The organization nurtures and serves a community of artists, curators and high school apprentices through a dynamic learning model that focuses on two key areas of professionalization in the field of art: access and education.
Selected from an international pool of applicants, Fellows relocate to the Dixwell neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut to participate in NXTHVN’s mentorship-driven curriculum with professional development sessions led by visiting artists, curators, scholars, and practitioners. Each Fellow mentors a local high school Apprentice, providing hands-on instruction in studio and curatorial practices. The year culminates with exhibitions for Fellows and Apprentices.
Through active participation in NXTHVN’s intensive program that provides a generous stipend, dedicated studio space, and subsidized housing, early-career artists and curators make personal strides and interpersonal connections that advance their careers. NXTHVN Fellows emerge from the program as active professionals making significant contributions in art and culture through their creative work.
NXTHVN encourages and welcomes applicants of all backgrounds to apply for the fellowships. We do not discriminate based on age, race, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, religion, marital status, or nation of origin in our admission policies.
