Freiraum is a cultural platform of institutions and independent initiatives working on strategies for positive social change and greater individual and collective freedom in a cross-disciplinary manner.

The Freiraum Platform partners are active in the areas of arts, culture, civic engagement, education, and learning. They are spread in more than 40 cities across Europe. The Platform is decentralised and participatory, based on a flexible governance model that enables partner members to contribute according to their needs, means and expertise.

Goals and Activities

Freiraum invites individuals, groups, and local communities to reflect and learn from each other through cultural, artistic and creative activities, in pursuit of community, democracy, emancipation, and solidarity. Freiraum aims to empower both its partner members and the communities they address, through the exchange of existing know-how and the co-production of new knowledge, expertise, practices and methodologies. It promotes alternative models of cultural policy on a grassroots, community and transnational level. Freiraum activities include artistic projects and residencies, workshops and community events (all online and/or offline), culminating in the annual Freiraum Festival, that communicates, shares, and interacts its work with audience, communities, and decision-makers across Europe.

Background

Freiraum is an autonomous, self-governed platform that was initiated and funded by the Goethe-Institut in 2017-2020, and is currently taking shape as an independent NGO entity with a legal seat in Greece.
