As one of the world’s largest and most renowned universities for music, theatre and film, the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna offers education for over 3,000 students from more than 70 countries worldwide. In its more than 200-year history, the University has shaped numerous leading world-class artists.
The mdw’s 25 departments cover a wide range of subjects, from vocal and instrumental studies to conducting and composition, from music education and research to Early Music, Contemporary Music and Popular Music, from chamber music, orchestra and opera to music physiology and music therapy. The Max Reinhardt Seminar is considered one of the best acting schools in the German-speaking world, and the Vienna Film Academy has made a decisive contribution to the international upswing in Austrian film in recent years.
Scientific research at the mdw is characterised by a huge thematic and methodological diversity within the humanities, cultural studies, social and natural sciences. Interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity is likewise promoted and developed at mdw’s scientific institutes and research centres and within the range of its internationally structured doctoral programme.
Artistic Research and the artistic doctorate are structurally anchored at the mdw through the ARC (Artistic Research Center).
