Hordaland Kunstsenter is a resource centre for contemporary art in the context of the Vestland region in Norway. The core of our activities is a public program of exhibitions, education projects, events and conversations. The art centre includes a bookshop, café and an all-year-round residency program.
Hordaland Kunstsenter works actively with art in public space and provides consultancy to both the public and the private sector. Hordaland kunstsenter aims to develop and stimulate the production, the use and at the conversations around public space and urban development.
The mission of Hordaland kunstsenter is:
- to promote the use and public awareness of visual and applied arts
- to preserve and augment artist-run mediation of the visual and applied arts
- to safeguard artistic freedom of expression and the right to choose the form of artistic execution without regard to commercial considerations
Hordaland Kunstsenter was established in 1976 as the first artist-run art centre in Norway and is situated in a historic building in the city centre of Bergen. In its past, the building served as a school for the poor as well as the city archive.
Hordaland kunstsenter is part of the association Contemporary Art Centres in Norway.
