Since its origin in 1934, Weisman Art Museum has been a teaching museum for the University of Minnesota. Located at the heart of campus, gallery admission and museum membership are always free. Today, education remains central to the museum’s mission to create art experiences that spark discovery, critical thinking, and transformation, linking the University and the community. In addition to presenting nationally regarded exhibitions, educational resources, and community programming, the Weisman is home to the dynamic Target Studio for Creative Collaboration. The Target Studio is a unique museum space dedicated to collaborations between artists and scholars. It functions as a workplace, a convening space, a laboratory, a gallery, and a classroom, and hosts workshops, discussions, exhibitions, performances, and symposia. The Target Studio’s collaborative relationships spread across departments at the University of Minnesota, and includes partnerships with curators, artists, and scholars across the region. Target Studio’s activities cross both sector and disciplinary boundaries, encompassing academic disciplines in humanities and sciences and virtually all creative practices—all supporting and promoting the culture of sharing and working together.
