The University of Gothenburg has approximately 37,000 students and 6,000 employees. It is one of the major universities in northern Europe. The University’s roughly 40 different Departments cover most scientific disciplines, making it one of Sweden’s broadest and most wide-ranging higher education institutions.
At The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at The University of Gothenburg we offer a creative and dynamic environment where different art forms meet. Each year close to 1,500 students take part in Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, teacher education, freestanding courses and doctoral programmes in Film, Photography, Fine Art, Literary Composition, Artistic Practice, Design, Crafts, Music, Musical Theatre, Opera and Acting at our three academies. In other words—an incomparable artistic breadth alongside high performance, which, in combination, creates a vibrant place for study and the development of artistic practice. The three academies are: Valand Academy, HDK - School of Design and Crafts, and the Academy of Music and Drama.
On January 1, 2020, Valand Academy and HDK – Academy of Design and Crafts merged and formed HDK-Valand – a new University department for design and art. Our goal is the formation of a strong arts academy, and our focus: the promotion of cutting-edge research, education and outreach.
