DISTANZ is an international art book publisher based in Berlin and directed by Matthias Kliefoth and Christian Boros. With an interdisciplinary team with expertise in art history, the humanities, and design, DISTANZ publishes books on contemporary art, art theory, photography, architecture, and design. We work with internationally leading museums and institutions to develop, design, and produce exhibition catalogues and publish monographs on selected positions in contemporary art. DISTANZ accompanies every phase of book production with a long-standing network of authors, editors, and translators, and works with the most renowned printers and pre-press studios.
DISTANZ initiates dialogues between artists and writers who grapple with socially relevant concerns: new tendencies in art, gender and queer theories, collectivity, sustainability and climate change, artificial intelligence, among other critical perspectives on recent history and current affairs through contemporary art are only some of the discursive strands in our program of publications.
Established in 2010, DISTANZ has produced over five hundred books that are manufactured in Germany to the highest possible quality standards using certified best ecological practices and sold around the world. Our publications reach an international audience through specialized partner distributors as well as online through all major bookselling platforms. DISTANZ is a consecutive winner of the German Publishing Award 2022 and 2023.
