Schaulager was founded in 2003 with the aim of combining the storage, display, and care of contemporary art. It is based on the innovative idea of storing artworks in such a way that they remain accessible for study purposes even when they are not on show.
The collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation at Schaulager and its exhibition activities provide a wealth of material for documentation, publications, academic research, and public events.
Specialists can study works at firsthand and use Schaulager’s archive and library. Although primarily intended for professionals, teachers, and students, Schaulager also reaches a wider public by mounting major exhibitions of contemporary art and hosting other events.
