As one of the most innovative exhibition houses in Austria, the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark is dedicated to the production and presentation of innovative artistic positions in the field of contemporary art. As a lively platform that supports both international and outstanding local artists, the institution is committed to making contemporary art accessible through free admission to all members of society.
The beautiful modernist pavilion architecture from the early 1950s was built as one of the first white cubes in Austria. Over the years, outstanding artistic positions such as Josef Bauer, Cosima von Bonin, Tom Burr, Cosey Fanny Tutti, Bruno Gironcoli, Albert Oehlen, Ulrike Oettinger, Adrian Piper, Julia Scher, Rosemarie Trockel were shown in thematic group exhibitions, and in the frame of the legendary Three-Country Biennial Trigon, Marina Abramović/Ulaj, Sanja Ivecović, Mangelos, Gianni Colombo, Luciano Fabro, Luigi Ontani.
Under the direction of Sandro Droschl, who has run the institution since 2013, and institutionally reorganized it as HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark in 2021 various formats such as solo and thematic group exhibitions, performances, and residencies aim to respond directly to the diverse means of expression of today’s artistic production and to be an open place for the resonance of currently relevant discussions.
